Tsagan

The Kalmyk holiday of Tsagan Sar, is based on the Tibetan New Year or "losar". The Tibetan year has 12 lunar months (new moon to new moon). 354 solar days. To stay in harmony with the solar year of 365 days a 13th lunar month is added about every 30 months. The New Year ('losar') starts with the new moon. A 12-years-cycle, starts with the year of the hare, followed by the year of the dragon, snake, horse, sheep or ram, monkey, bird or rooster, dog, pig, rat, ox, and tiger. In addition there are the five elements: earth, fire, iron or metal, water, and wood. In combination with the 12-year-rhythm of the lunar zodiac signs and a 2-year-rhythm of a female and male version of the 5 elements, it comes to a 60-year-cycle. Depending on where in the world you live, and/or where in the world you use the sighting of the new moon to determine the beginning of the new year, this chart may differ by a day, from the date Tsagan is observed.
